Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford began acting during her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford was then able to apply to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies that were added to her show in the year 1996.
